Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
